Do You Suffer From a Sleeping Disorder?

Many people suffer from sleeping disorders, without even realizing they have a problem that can be treated. They just think they can’t sleep due to other reasons, stress, staying up too late, getting up too early, etc. But chances are, if you frequently have a hard time falling asleep at night, or staying asleep, if you fall asleep at awkward times, such as while driving or at work, if you spend more than ten hours out of twenty-four sleep, then you may have a sleeping disorder. There are seven sure symptoms that pretty much will tell you whether your sleep problems are being caused by a sleeping disorder, and if you have them, then you should talk to your doctor. The seven classic symptoms of a sleeping disorder are: being hard to wake up in the mornings, or waking up very early in the mornings, having a hard time concentrating or focusing on the task at hand, falling asleep on the job, feeling depressed, stressed, being grumpy and hateful to others, snoring, and restless legs while in bed.

You may just think you are lazy when you find yourself sleeping all the time, or having a hard time getting up in the mornings, even after a full night’s rest, but that may not be the case. The same goes if you wake up very early in the morning and can’t go back to sleep, either of these are signs of a sleeping disorder, especially if they occur frequently. You may try going to bed earlier at night, but if this doesn’t help, and you are sleeping more than eight hours every night and still feeling fatigued when you get up, then you probably should talk to your doctor. Not getting enough quality sleep can be very detrimental to your health. You doctor may be able to determine what is causing you to feel this way, and provide some treatment that can help get your sleep regulated again.

Sleep disorders can also cause people to have a difficult time concentrating, even on something simple, such as watching television or reading a book. This can affect your performance at work, leading to discipline, a poor work record, and ultimately job loss. You could also cause yourself or someone else to be injured, especially if you have a job that requires you to drive, or work with heavy equipment.

Falling asleep on the job or at school can be caused by many factors, including staying up too late, getting up too early, stress, or drug and alcohol abuse. If you don’t have the above problems, and still can’t stay awake, then you may have a treatable sleeping disorder, and should seek the advice of your physician.

It stands to reason that if you don’t get enough sleep, you may have a shorter fuse than usual, or be grumpy, even when you really don’t mean to be. If you are fatigued, and just generally don’t feel well, it is also all too easy to succumb to depression as well. If your family has been complaining about your mood swings, you should talk to your doctor. There may be an underlying cause, such as a sleep disorder, which can be treated easily.

People who suffer from restless leg syndrome will often lie down, only to have to get up because of leg pain or numbness. It can be hard to get enough sleep if you have to deal with this annoying problem. The good thing is that your doctor can give you medication that can help stem this problem, so that you can get the sleep you need.

If you snore, chances are it may not bother you, but you may hear complaints about it from other members of your household. Snoring is one of the first signs of sleep apnea, often caused by being overweight. This problem should also be brought to your doctor’s attention.

Still others who have a sleep disorder have no problem falling asleep; they just can’t stay that way. They fall asleep and wake up every few minutes all through the night. This is usually caused by any number of factors, such as poor nutrition, stress, not enough physical exercise, etc.

No matter what your sleep problems are, you should talk to your doctor. You could have a condition that will only worsen with time, and your doctor may be able to work with you in developing a successful treatment program that can solve all of your sleep related problems.
