Sleep Disorder-Snoring

There is probably not one person on the planet who can honestly say they have never heard someone snore, as much as they may wish otherwise. You may not have ever heard yourself snoring, but chances are you have shared a bed with someone who does, and it is one of the most annoying sounds you could ever have to listen to. It can be a symptom of a dangerous condition for the person snoring, and they should seek medical treatment for the problem. Snoring is not just annoying, it can be masking a dangerous medical condition, leading to the decline of your health and ability to function normally.

Snoring is a pretty good indication of sleep apnea, especially if it happens frequently. Everyone snores occasionally, especially when they are congested due to a cold or respiratory infection. Sometimes if you drink too much alcohol before bed, or take certain medications, you will also snore worse, or more than normal. If your snoring is caused by one of these problems, it can be a simple fix, all you have to do is lessen your intake of alcoholic beverages, and have your doctor change your medication if could be the cause. If congestion is making you snore, try sleeping on an extra pillow, using a humidifier to add more moisture to the room, and your symptoms will subside as you recover from your illness.

If you snore on a regular basis, and it interferes with your sleep, you need to talk to your doctor as soon as possible, especially if nothing you do lessens the problem. Your doctor will likely send you to a sleep clinic to be observed for sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea and snoring are not the same things, even though they may sound the same to someone who is listening to the patient sleep. Sleep apnea actually causes a person to stop breathing, and can even lead to death in rare cases if left untreated. Snoring is often a tell-tale symptom of sleep apnea.

Snoring can cause problems for not only the snorer, but their spouse as well. It is very difficult to sleep with someone snoring right beside you, believe me, I know, and the person snoring doesn’t get any sleep due to their spouse waking them up to tell them to stop snoring all night. Eventually it may get so bad that you can no longer sleep together, which can put undue strain on the relationship. Snoring can not only interrupt sleep, but through sleep deprivation can lead to other problems for you both, such as mood swings, grumpiness, extreme fatigue, and inability to concentrate.

Snoring can also lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and even diabetes if left untreated. It can also severely impact the immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off infections.

There are some changes that you can make in your day to day living that can help eliminate or reduce your snoring. Eat a healthy diet so that you don’t get overweight, exercise everyday, stop smoking, cut back on your intake of alcoholic beverages, and give your food plenty of time to digest before bed. Try changing your normal sleeping position, which also works for some.
